Tequila Guide & Staff Picks

The 5 Tequila Categories

  • Blanco / Plata (unaged or rested under 2 months) — bright, peppery, vegetal. The truest expression of agave. Best in margaritas and palomas.
  • Reposado ("rested" 2–12 months in oak) — softer, light vanilla, balanced. Most versatile category.
  • Añejo (1–3 years in oak) — caramel, oak, smoother. Sip neat.
  • Extra Añejo (3+ years) — bourbon-like complexity. Special-occasion sipping.
  • Cristalino — añejo filtered to remove color but keep flavor. The new luxury category.

Buffalo House Tequila Picks

  • Under $40 — daily-drinker: Espolòn Blanco/Reposado, Lunazul, El Jimador, Hornitos Plata.
  • $40–$80 — premium: Casamigos Blanco, Don Julio Blanco, Patrón Silver, Herradura Reposado, Fortaleza Blanco.
  • $80–$200: Don Julio 1942, Clase Azul Reposado, Casamigos Añejo, Herradura Selección Suprema.
  • $200+ / collector: Clase Azul Ultra, Tears of Llorona, Casa Dragones Joven.

Read the Label

Look for a NOM number (NOM 1102, NOM 1414, etc.) — this identifies the actual distillery. Many "different" brands come from the same NOM. Look for "100% de Agave" on the label. Avoid "diffuser-produced" tequilas if you can find provenance — small distillers using brick ovens (tahonas) make superior spirit.

Cocktails & Pairings

Margarita (Blanco + lime + Cointreau, salt rim), Paloma (Blanco + grapefruit soda + lime), Tequila Old Fashioned (Reposado or Añejo + agave syrup + bitters), Ranch Water (Blanco + Topo Chico + lime). Pair with grilled fish, carnitas, ceviche, dark chocolate (Añejo). Read our full tequila guide.

Tequila questions

What's the difference between blanco, reposado, and añejo tequila?
Blanco (silver) is unaged — bright and peppery, ideal for margaritas. Reposado rests 2–12 months in oak for a smoother, lightly oaked profile. Añejo ages 1–3 years for a rich, sipping-worthy character closer to whiskey.
What tequila is best for margaritas?
A 100% agave blanco is the classic margarita base — its crisp agave punch cuts through lime and orange liqueur. Reposado makes a slightly smoother, rounder margarita if you prefer less bite.
Is tequila gluten-free?
Yes — 100% agave tequila is made from the blue agave plant, not grain, so it's naturally gluten-free. 'Mixto' tequilas add other sugars but are still typically gluten-free; go 100% agave for certainty.
What does '100% agave' mean?
It means the tequila is made entirely from blue agave with no added sugars — generally smoother and better-tasting than 'mixto' tequilas, which cut in up to 49% other sugars. The label will say '100% agave'.
