Spanish Wines

Rioja and Ribera del Duero for reds (both built on Tempranillo), Albariño for crisp whites, Garnacha for juicy reds, and Cava for traditional-method sparkling.

Spain's most famous red wine region, in the north. Rioja is mostly Tempranillo, aged in oak, with red cherry fruit alongside vanilla, leather and dill from the barrel.

They're aging classifications. Crianza is the youngest, Reserva ages longer, and Gran Reserva the longest — made only in strong vintages. More aging generally means a smoother, more complex wine.

Tapas, cured meats like jamón and chorizo, grilled lamb, and Manchego cheese. Rioja and roast lamb is one of the great classic pairings.
