The Vodka Martini is the streamlined cousin of the classic gin martini that rose to fame in the mid-20th century as vodka gained popularity in American bars; its elegant simplicity made it a mainstay in cocktail culture and a staple of the martini glass. What defines a great Vodka Martini is pristine cold, restrained vermouth, and just enough dilution to open the spirit without softening it—quality vodka and chilled glassware matter more than fanciful additions. In Buffalo bars and in our store's tasting classes I emphasize a clean, measured pour and a quick stir to deliver the silky, spirit‑forward profile aficionados expect.
Ingredients
| 2 ¼ oz | vodka (good quality, chilled) |
| ½ oz | dry vermouth (chilled) |
| 1 dash | orange bitters (optional) |
| 1 tsp | lemon twist (garnish) |
| 3 tsp | green olives, pitted (garnish alternative) |
Instructions
- Chill a martini glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink
- Fill a mixing glass or shaker with plenty of ice to properly chill and dilute the cocktail
- Add the vodka, dry vermouth, and optional dash of orange bitters to the mixing glass
- Stir briskly for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted, or shake quickly if you prefer a colder, cloudier texture
- Discard ice or water from the chilled martini glass and fine-strain the mixture into the glass
- Express a lemon twist over the surface or drop three olives on a pick and serve immediately
