Mezcal Negroni Recipe cocktail in glass with garnish

Mezcal Negroni Recipe: The Smoky Twist on a Classic

The Mezcal Negroni is a smoky reinterpretation of the classic Italian Negroni—an equal-parts, spirit-forward cocktail born in early 20th-century Italy that shines through simplicity. Replacing gin with mezcal brings an earthy, charred agave character that plays beautifully against Campari’s citrus-bitter bite and the rounded sweetness of Italian vermouth; a great version balances smoke, bitterness, and sugar without one element dominating. Use a quality joven mezcal and a fresh, aromatic vermouth, stir with clear ice to control dilution, and you’ll have a complex, glassy Negroni ideal for sipping. If you’re in Buffalo or visiting our store, ask for a balanced mezcal to start.

Ingredients

1 oz Mezcal (joven)
1 oz Campari
1 oz Sweet vermouth (Italian)
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 leaves Orange peel (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Chill a rocks glass and prepare a large clear ice cube if available
  2. Add mezcal, Campari, sweet vermouth, and a dash of Angostura to a mixing glass filled with ice
  3. Stir gently for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted
  4. Strain into the chilled rocks glass over the large ice cube
  5. Express the orange peel over the drink to release oils, rim the glass with the peel, and drop it in as garnish
Garnish: Orange peel
💡 Pro tips: Use a joven mezcal with clean agave smoke rather than an overpowering peat-forward bottling to keep the bitter-sweet balance. Stirring time matters—aim for 20–30 seconds to achieve roughly 25–30% dilution and a silky texture. For a softer finish, try a half barspoon of agave syrup or substitute a richer, herbal vermouth.
