Born in the pre-Prohibition cocktail era and revived during the modern craft cocktail renaissance, the Last Word is an equal-parts masterpiece of gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime that balances bright citrus with pronounced herbal depth. What makes a great version is freshness and restraint: fresh lime, a quality maraschino such as Luxardo, and a gin that supports without overwhelming the Chartreuse. One practical tip is to shake very hard and double-strain into a chilled coupe for the ideal texture; if you're in Buffalo our store stocks fresh limes and Luxardo to help you make an authentic pour.
Ingredients
| ¾ oz | London dry gin |
| ¾ oz | green Chartreuse |
| ¾ oz | maraschino liqueur (e.g., Luxardo) |
| ¾ oz | fresh lime juice |
Instructions
- Chill a coupe by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.
- Add gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker.
- Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until very cold and properly diluted.
- Double-strain into the chilled coupe to remove ice shards and achieve a silky texture.
- Serve without garnish or add a single brandied cherry if you prefer a hint of sweetness.
