Last Word Recipe cocktail in glass with garnish

Last Word Recipe: The Prohibition-Era Comeback

Born in the pre-Prohibition cocktail era and revived during the modern craft cocktail renaissance, the Last Word is an equal-parts masterpiece of gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime that balances bright citrus with pronounced herbal depth. What makes a great version is freshness and restraint: fresh lime, a quality maraschino such as Luxardo, and a gin that supports without overwhelming the Chartreuse. One practical tip is to shake very hard and double-strain into a chilled coupe for the ideal texture; if you're in Buffalo our store stocks fresh limes and Luxardo to help you make an authentic pour.

Ingredients

¾ oz London dry gin
¾ oz green Chartreuse
¾ oz maraschino liqueur (e.g., Luxardo)
¾ oz fresh lime juice

Instructions

  1. Chill a coupe by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.
  2. Add gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker.
  3. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until very cold and properly diluted.
  4. Double-strain into the chilled coupe to remove ice shards and achieve a silky texture.
  5. Serve without garnish or add a single brandied cherry if you prefer a hint of sweetness.
Garnish: No garnish or brandied cherry
💡 Pro tips: Use the freshest lime juice and a clean, herbal-forward gin so the Chartreuse can sing; measuring by jigger or weight preserves the delicate equal-parts balance. Shake hard with ample ice to get the right chill and dilution, then double-strain for a smooth silky mouthfeel. If the Chartreuse feels overpowering, reduce it by a quarter ounce or try a floral Old Tom for a rounder, softer take.
