Bramble Recipe: The Modern Gin Classic

The Bramble, created in 1984 by London bartender Dick Bradsell, is a modern British classic that pairs bright lemon and gin with the sweet, dark counterpoint of crème de mûre. What defines a great Bramble is balance: a firm but not overpowering gin base, crisp fresh lemon, restrained simple syrup, and a measured drizzle of blackberry liqueur that visually and flavorfully bridges the components. Ingredients

2 oz London dry gin
¾ oz fresh lemon juice
½ oz simple syrup (1:1)
½ oz crème de mûre (blackberry liqueur)
1 cup crushed ice
1 tbsp fresh blackberry for garnish
1 tbsp lemon slice for garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a rocks glass with crushed ice and set aside to chill the glass
  2. Add gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup to a shaker with a few large ice cubes and shake briskly for about 10 seconds
  3. Strain the mixture into the prepared rocks glass over fresh crushed ice
  4. Drizzle the crème de mûre over the top so it drifts through the ice and creates the signature 'bramble' streaks
  5. Garnish with a fresh blackberry and a lemon slice and serve with a short straw
